Layers of time
Fuzine Castle was built as a crossing point over the Ljubljanica River's rapids between 1528 and 1557 on commission of the wealthy local merchant Veit Khis, who also served as mayor of Ljubljana. Since 1992, when it was thoroughly renovated by the architect Peter Gabrijelic, Fuzine Castle has housed the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO).
MAO conducted an international competition for an intervention in the courtyard of Fuzine Castle to explore the potential of possible. From among ten proposals, MAO selected and carried out the project Layers of Time.
A delicate proposal, based on the present reality of the castle and its use. The intervention engages in dialogue with the temporary layers that have shaped the reality of the castle. There is a new programme in the courtyard during the hottest months: a series of retractable awnings can be set in different positions depending on various uses. There is a collection of flexible elements, vegetation, and furniture. This building is the result of the compilation of a collection of layers. The different architectures that have to modify it, the history, the age of the elements, the change of programme.... A collection of layers that shapes and renders the reality of the building and its relation with its surroundings.
