Plan of Recovery of Underground Spaces of Madrid

Madrid has a network of underground galleries belonging to a medieval water supply infrastructure. The project's strategy is driven by a clear desire to reclaim this lost landscape.

After thorough research, it is decided to intervene in the historical downtown of Madrid. A Plan of Recovery for these antique spaces is created, setting the main principles: to recover sections of the galleries, to develop new connections and to propose interventions for new access points. The plan involves a recovery of the existing underground structures by transforming them into public space.

The project sets new urban scenes that will reflect that lost reality. The access points will be developed in detail based on their typology (park, square or existing building). Each intervention will be defined in agreement with its spatial strategy utilizing elements like arches, vaults or folded retaining walls. These geometries are shaped according to the stress endured by the materials.

The thrill of the project remains in its role as a palimpsest, recovering abandoned connections, operating on existing spaces and creating urban scenes from what there was and what there will be.
